Explore Rarotonga beneath the surface

Rarotonga rises a maximum of 658 meters from sea level and is completely surrounded by a reef ring which builds the outer side of the lagoon. After that the reef slopes slowly down for 100-200 metres before dropping dramatically away to depths of over 4500 metres. The lagoon is great for snorkeling, particularly at Aroa Beach and the Titikaveka Marine Reserve.

Beyond the lagoon, the reefs and drop offs that fall away to thousands of meters make great dive sites with caves, canyons and tunnels to explore. There are also some wrecks to break up the reefs, some of which have been damaged by cyclones that have hit the island (so they are well broken up - nothing to penetrate anymore).

The best drop-offs are along the south coast, but the north coast sustains better coral growth. In general Rarotonga doesn't have a huge amount of soft corals mostly beautiful hard coral formations.
The year-round warm water and the easy accessibility, boat rides from 2 minutes to max 20 minutes. The circular shape of the island of Rarotonga allows divers to go out in virtually any weather to take advantage of shelter from rough wave action.
